Food for Thought European fishermen are
fishing out the coasts of Africa and Asia. For example,
some 400,000 t of fish are caught every year off the
coast of Senegal alone, and that's only counting the fish
that gets exported the same volume is tipped back into
the sea as "waste". Overfishing at its very
worst. One third of European catch is processed into fish
meal for animal fattening. This is one reason why the
famine problem in the so-called Third World is getting
bigger and bigger. At the same time, there are almost
daily appeals on the radio, on television and in the
print media to donate for the famine-stricken in the
Third World. At the same time, every day the self same
media advertise cat and dog food. European and North
American pets aren't going hungry. For one thing they get
premium fish on their plates. Currently some 200 million
pairs of frog's legs are consumed every year. This
outrageous exploitation of Asian frog populations for
luxury consumption by North American and European
"gourmets" is worsening the plight of starving
people in the countries of origin countries already hard
hit by famine. What is more, due to the lack of frogs as
insect predators, the occurrence of "harmful
insects" is in some cases exploding. As a result,
farming areas are being poisoned with vast quantities of
pesticides such as DDT. The ecological balance is being
damaged with lasting effect. The depletion of forests
from the Arctic to the Tropics is speeding ahead
unchecked. In many cases, only 3% of the timber biomass
is actually used. The greed of Western First World
nations for tropical timber is increasing. From luxury
furniture to toilet seats, everything is made of tropical
timber such as mahogany. Vast amounts of ramin timber are
being sold at give-away prices in DIY stores. Existing
alternatives are generally not taken advantage of,
business with primary nature is simply more lucrative.
But for how long? These three highly significant examples
alone show quite clearly the future dilemma that will
face mankind. The fact is that only approximately one
fifth of all people gains anything from exploiting
nature, the land and the sea. These are people in Europe,
North America and Japan. Four fifths of the global
population gain almost nothing from it, instead they get
famine, drought and poverty. |
